Water & wastewater operations and maintenance insurance

Contract operators run water and wastewater systems for municipalities, MUDs, special districts and private developments. The work is professional as much as physical: a process control error can lead to contamination, a boil-water notice or a permit violation.

Our approach

We build O&M contractor insurance that combines professional and pollution liability, protects operators against overflow and contamination claims, and meets the requirements in district and municipal operating agreements.

Exposures we plan around

  • Operator error leading to contamination or permit violations
  • Sanitary sewer overflows and bypass events
  • Process control and reporting errors
  • Chlorine and treatment chemical handling
  • Confined space and lift-station injuries

Frequently asked questions

What insurance does a contract water operator need?

At minimum, general liability, contractors professional liability, pollution liability, workers' compensation and commercial auto. Operating agreements with districts often specify limits and require the district be added as additional insured.

Does general liability cover a sewer overflow?

Usually not, because of the pollution exclusion. A pollution liability policy covers third-party claims and cleanup costs from overflows.

Why would an operator need cyber coverage?

Remote access to SCADA and control systems is a growing target. Cyber coverage pays for incident response and covers liability if an intrusion disrupts service.
