Waste collection, recycling & commercial hauling insurance

Waste collection is one of the hardest classes in commercial auto. Heavy trucks run dense residential routes every day, and large jury verdicts have pushed many carriers out of the market. Recycling facilities add fire risk, especially from lithium batteries.

Our approach

We place waste hauler insurance and recycling company insurance for municipal solid waste collectors, commercial and roll-off haulers, and material recovery facilities, including the bonds and limits municipal franchise contracts require.

Exposures we plan around

  • Heavy truck accidents and large verdicts
  • Worker injuries from lifting, backing and hopper operations
  • Leaks and spills at transfer stations and in transit
  • Fires at recycling and transfer facilities
  • Municipal franchise and collection contract requirements

Frequently asked questions

Why is garbage truck insurance so expensive?

Waste trucks are heavy, make frequent stops in residential areas and drive many miles. Combined with rising verdict sizes, that makes auto liability the largest cost in most hauler programs. Telematics, camera systems and driver training are the strongest levers on price.

Do I need pollution coverage as a hauler?

Most auto and GL policies exclude pollution. A hydraulic fluid or leachate spill during collection can trigger cleanup costs, so transportation pollution coverage is recommended and often required by municipal contracts.

Can you help with municipal solid waste contract requirements?

Yes. We review the franchise agreement or RFP insurance section, confirm limits, endorsements and bond requirements, and build a program that meets them.
